Palworld's Unexpected Path: Forgoing AAA Status for Indie Growth
Pocketpair, the developer behind the wildly successful Palworld, has amassed considerable profits, potentially enough to create a game exceeding AAA standards. However, CEO Takuro Mizobe has reiterated the studio's commitment to the indie development model.
Despite Palworld's tens of billions of yen in revenue (approximately tens of millions of USD), Mizobe believes Pocketpair lacks the organizational structure for a massive AAA project. He emphasized that Palworld's success built upon the foundation of previous indie titles, Craftopia and Overdungeon. Rather than scaling up to match the potential of their current financial success, Mizobe prefers to maintain a smaller, more agile team focused on creating "interesting indie games."
Mizobe cited the challenges of AAA development, including the difficulty of creating a hit title with a large team, contrasted with the flourishing indie game market, empowered by advanced game engines and improved industry conditions. He credits the indie community for Pocketpair's growth and expressed a desire to give back.
"We wouldn't be able to keep up with the scale of a beyond-AAA game," Mizobe explained. The studio's focus remains on exploring the potential of the Palworld IP through diverse mediums rather than expanding their team or infrastructure.
Palworld, currently in early access, continues to receive significant updates, including the recent PvP arena and Sakurajima island additions. Furthermore, Pocketpair has established Palworld Entertainment with Sony to oversee global licensing and merchandising. This strategic move demonstrates a commitment to expanding the Palworld brand beyond the game itself, solidifying their unique approach to growth within the gaming industry.
