Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Nostalgic Nod to JRPG Classics with a Modern Twist
Turn-Based Strategy Meets Real-Time Action
Drawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 uniquely blends turn-based combat with real-time elements. Heavily influenced by the Final Fantasy and Persona series, the game aims to establish its own distinctive identity within the genre.
Creative director Guillaume Broche, speaking with Eurogamer after a well-received SGF demo, revealed the driving force behind the game's development: a desire for a high-fidelity turn-based RPG. He cited Persona (Atlus) and Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) as stylish and nostalgic examples that helped shape his vision. "If nobody wants to do it, I will do it," Broche stated, explaining his motivation.
The game's narrative centers on preventing the enigmatic Paintress from unleashing death once more. Players will explore unique environments, such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters, which promise to be as captivating as the storyline itself.
Combat in Expedition 33 demands quick reflexes. While actions are input in a turn-based manner, players must react swiftly to enemy attacks to effectively defend. This innovative system draws parallels to titles like Persona, Final Fantasy, and the critically acclaimed Sea of Stars.
Broche expressed his surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception. He anticipated interest from turn-based fans, but the level of excitement exceeded his expectations.
While acknowledging Persona's influence, Broche clarified to PC Gamer that the Final Fantasy series, particularly entries 8, 9, and 10, played a more significant role in shaping the game. He emphasized that the game is an homage, not a direct imitation, reflecting his personal experiences and evolving creative tastes. The team also drew inspiration from Persona's dynamic camera movements and menus, aiming for a similarly dynamic feel while maintaining a unique art style.
The open world of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 offers complete character control. Players can seamlessly switch between party members and utilize unique traversal abilities to solve environmental puzzles. Broche even encourages players to experiment with unconventional character builds and combinations.
The development team, in a PlayStation Blog post, expressed their hope that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will resonate with players in the same way classic games have impacted them.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
