World of Warcraft's upcoming housing system: A stark contrast to Final Fantasy XIV?
Blizzard has offered a sneak peek at the player housing feature coming to World of Warcraft in the World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion, subtly highlighting differences from Final Fantasy XIV's approach. The WoW team emphasized accessibility as a core design principle.
In a recent developer blog, Blizzard declared its intention to make housing available to all players. They stated explicitly that there will be "no exorbitant requirements or high purchase costs, no lotteries, and no onerous upkeep." Furthermore, players won't lose their homes if their subscription lapses.
This directly contrasts with Final Fantasy XIV's housing system, notorious for its limited plots, high Gil costs, lottery system, and the risk of demolition for inactive houses. FFXIV's system, while fostering impressive player creativity (resulting in player-built theaters, nightclubs, and more), has also generated considerable frustration.
WoW's housing aims for inclusivity. Houses are shared within a player's Warband, allowing all characters within that group to access and utilize the same property regardless of faction. While a Human character can't purchase a house in a Horde zone, a Troll character in the same Warband can, providing access for all.
While WoW will initially feature two housing zones divided into "Neighborhoods" of approximately 50 plots each, these areas are instanced, offering both public and private options. Public areas are dynamically generated as needed, meaning there's no predetermined limit on the number of available plots.
Blizzard envisions housing as an ongoing feature, promising a “long-lasting journey” with continuous updates and expansions planned for future patches. This long-term commitment, coupled with the clear contrast drawn with FFXIV's challenges, suggests Blizzard is acutely aware of potential pitfalls and is aiming for a more player-friendly experience.
Further details are expected during the summer reveal of World of Warcraft: Midnight.
