For many *Monster Hunter* players, the thrill of crafting new equipment from hard-earned hunt materials is a core part of the experience. The satisfaction of completing a matching weapon and armor set after repeated battles with a formidable beast is unmatched. This core gameplay loop has defined the series since its inception.
The *Monster Hunter* series has always centered on a unique concept: conquer powerful monsters and then harness their power through crafted equipment made from their remains. Players prove their strength by slaying these creatures, subsequently adopting those same creatures’ abilities to become even stronger.
In an interview with IGN, *Monster Hunter Wilds* Executive Director and Art Director Kaname Fujioka explained this design philosophy: "While our designs have broadened, we used to focus on the idea that if you wear Rathalos equipment, you'd look like a Rathalos." *Wilds* introduces new monsters, each contributing unique and visually striking equipment. For instance, Rompopolo, a mad scientist-inspired monster, boasts head armor resembling a plague doctor's mask. See the full armor set in the hunt video below.
However, beyond the distinctive monster-themed equipment, the developers emphasize the importance of the starting gear. Fujioka states, "I designed the starting weapons for all 14 weapon types from scratch. This is a first for me. Previously, starting weapons were primitive. But since our protagonist is a chosen hunter, plain weapons wouldn't fit. I wanted even the starting equipment to feel special, making the player feel like a star from the outset."

Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda adds, "Weapon designs in *Monster Hunter: World* generally maintained a certain form, customized by monster materials. But in *Wilds*, each weapon has a unique design." This reflects the narrative of the player as a seasoned hunter tasked with investigating the Forbidden Lands. Tokuda also highlights the detail in the starting armor, ensuring it aligns with the story.
"The starting armor, the Hope series, is incredibly cool," Tokuda explains. "You could use it until the end and it wouldn't feel out of place."

The Hope set, with its deep emerald green base, transforms into a hooded long coat when fully equipped. Fujioka explains the complexity of its creation: "We paid more attention to the Hope series than any other equipment. Previous games had separate upper and lower body armor; we couldn't create a coat. But we invested resources to create a flowing hooded coat in this game. While players will discover many equipment pieces, we wanted the Hope series to be stylish yet understated, not overpowering the later game gear."
Starting with such meticulously crafted equipment is a unique luxury. The 14 starting weapons and the Hope series are designed to portray an experienced, elite hunter. We eagerly anticipate examining their details in the final game.
