Krafton, the publisher behind inZOI, has responded to discussions about the game's declining Steam concurrent player numbers, emphasizing that sales figures are a more accurate success metric for this single-player title.
The visually striking Sims competitor made a strong debut on Steam, reaching an all-time peak of 87,377 concurrent players. Krafton revealed that inZOI achieved remarkable sales of 1 million copies within its first week, setting a new record as the fastest-selling game in the South Korean company's history. It climbed to the top of Steam's Global Top Sellers List (by revenue) within just 40 minutes of launch. CEO CH Kim stated Krafton intends to cultivate inZOI as "a long-term franchise IP."
However, inZOI's concurrent player count has significantly decreased post-launch, with its recent 24-hour peak at 1,477 players. As reported by TheGamer, the game's peak concurrent numbers have even fallen below those of the 16-year-old The Sims 3 on Steam.
When IGN reached out for comment, Krafton explained that Steam concurrent player statistics aren't representative of inZOI's success since it's primarily a single-player experience.
"inZOI maintains consistent sales performance, and as a single-player title, we believe evaluating performance through sales milestones at major updates is more meaningful than tracking Steam concurrent players," Krafton stated.
The industry-wide focus on Steam player counts has sparked debate in recent years, with numerous developers arguing these metrics don't fully capture a game's performance, especially for single-player titles.
Earlier in 2024, John "Bucky" Buckley, community lead at Palworld developer Pocketpair, criticized the unhealthy fixation on "dead game" labels and player counts within gaming culture. Similarly, Helldivers 2 production director Alex Bolle told IGN in April that concurrent player numbers represent "just one metric among many."

Regarding inZOI's reception, Steam reviews currently show a "Mostly Positive" rating overall, though recent reviews are more "Mixed." Being an Early Access title, Krafton stressed to IGN that the game remains in development:
"Early Access marks just the beginning for inZOI. Our team remains focused on collecting player feedback while enhancing features, optimizing performance, and refining the overall gameplay experience. We're grateful to our passionate community and excited to roll out new content updates in the coming months."
Krafton also announced that inZOI will launch on the Mac App Store and Steam in August. The Mac version promises full optimization for Apple Silicon devices, leveraging MetalFX and Core ML technologies to deliver parity with the Windows experience.
