In a recent interview with VGC on December 18, The Witcher 4 narrative director Phillipp Weber acknowledged that replacing Geralt with Ciri as the main character could spark controversy among fans.
Given that Geralt has been the central figure in all previous Witcher games, this shift naturally raised eyebrows. “I think we definitely knew it could be controversial for some people because, of course, in the previous three Witcher games Geralt was the protagonist, and I think everyone really loved playing as Geralt,” Weber admitted.
Although he personally shares fans' attachment to Geralt and recognizes the legitimacy of their concerns, he firmly believes that choosing Ciri is the best creative direction. “The best thing that we can do—and I think this is really our goal—is to prove that with Ciri, we can do a lot of interesting things so we can really make it worth it. This decision wasn’t made yesterday; we started making this a very long time ago,” he explained.
Weber further elaborated that Ciri’s role had already begun evolving into a co-protagonist in both the novels and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. For CDPR, transitioning her into the lead felt like a natural progression of the series’ development over time. He also noted that this change opens up opportunities to explore new perspectives within the Witcher universe.
