NIS America Accelerates Western Releases of Trails and Ys Series
Fans of Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys RPG series will be pleased to hear that NIS America is significantly speeding up the localization process for Western audiences. This commitment to faster releases was announced by Senior Associate Producer Alan Costa during the recent digital showcase for Ys X: Nordics.
Costa confirmed NIS America's dedication to quicker localization, highlighting Ys X: Nordics (releasing this October) and Trails Through Daybreak II (early 2025) as examples of this improved turnaround time. While the latter's release is still over a year after its Japanese debut (September 2022), it represents a substantial improvement on previous localization schedules.
Historically, Western fans faced extensive delays. The Trails in the Sky series, for example, took seven years to reach global audiences. Even more recent titles like Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure experienced a twelve-year gap. These delays were largely attributed to the sheer volume of text requiring translation, as explained by former XSEED Games Localization Manager Jessica Chavez.
While NIS America acknowledges that localization remains a two-to-three-year process, the focus is now on optimizing the balance between speed and quality. Costa emphasized the company's commitment to rapid releases without compromising the quality of the translation. The past experience of a significant delay for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation errors underscores the importance of this careful approach.
The improved release schedule for Trails Through Daybreak II suggests a positive shift in NIS America's localization capabilities. The game's favorable reception further reinforces the potential for future successes in delivering high-quality localized titles more efficiently.
