Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has outlined ambitious plans to evolve Fortnite from its battle royale roots into a multifaceted gaming platform offering diverse experiences. The company aims to challenge players' perception of Fortnite as primarily a shooter game by expanding into new genres.
The Vision for Fortnite's Future
"Our core challenge is making players recognize Fortnite as the 'everything game' where you can experience any type of gameplay," Sweeney explained to IGN during Unreal Fest 2025. "This transformation requires persistent effort and delivering outstanding content across multiple genres."
Current Expansion Efforts
Epic's diversification strategy shows mixed results:
- Fortnite Festival continues attracting major musical artists for seasonal events
- Lego Fortnite maintains a loyal player base for survival crafting
- Rocket Racing has been phased out due to limited engagement
- Shooter-focused modes like Reload outperform other experimental offerings
Epic executives acknowledged that third-party experiences have occasionally surpassed their own core modes in popularity - a milestone highlighting Fortnite's evolving ecosystem.
Music Integration Challenges
"While our musical events draw millions, we haven't cracked regular engagement with music gameplay," Sweeney admitted. The Harmonix team continues innovating with Jam Tracks and instrument mechanics, but hasn't matched the success of Fortnite's battle royale events.
"There's potential for a modern music game reaching tens of millions of active users," Sweeney noted, referencing Rock Band's historical success.
Lego Fortnite's Position
Currently the most successful non-shooter mode, Lego Fortnite nevertheless falls short of Epic's expectations. "We're proud of its dedicated community but want broader adoption among Lego fans," an executive explained.

Technical Expansion Plans
Epic is enhancing creator tools in its UEFN editor to empower third-party developers. "By 2026, even our battle royale seasons will use the same tools available to all creators," Sweeney revealed, noting current disparities between internal and external development capabilities.
Why Transformation Matters
Sweeney emphasized the need for evolution: "Battle royale emerged from shooter genre evolution - it won't be the final form. We must stay ahead by embracing new technologies and gameplay innovations."
The executive also discussed Epic's recent AI initiatives in Unreal Engine and teased further collaborations following the Darth Vader AI experiment.
