Marvel Rivals Devs Prioritize Game Development Over Datamining

Author : Jason Update:Feb 21,2025

Marvel Rivals developers address dataminer speculation regarding leaked character lists. Dataminers have uncovered a trove of potential characters within the game's code, sparking debate over their authenticity. Some believe the developers are intentionally planting false leads, while others maintain the lists reflect genuine, albeit potentially discarded, ideas.

We directly questioned Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu and Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo about this alleged "troll." While denying any deliberate deception, they acknowledged the presence of leftover code from various design explorations. Wu explained that character development involves extensive concept work, prototyping, and testing, leaving traces in the game's files. The ultimate inclusion of a character hinges on player expectations and maintaining balanced gameplay. Koo likened the situation to finding a discarded notebook filled with brainstorming notes. He emphasized their priority is game development, not elaborate pranks.

The selection process for new characters was also detailed. Updates are planned roughly a year in advance, aiming for a new character release every six weeks. NetEase prioritizes balancing the roster by considering necessary skillsets and character types. They generate a list of potential additions, which are then reviewed by Marvel Games, taking into account community interest and upcoming Marvel projects (films, comics). This explains the extensive list of characters found in the code – a reflection of NetEase's ongoing brainstorming.

Marvel Rivals' successful launch and ongoing character additions, including the upcoming Human Torch and The Thing (February 21st release), demonstrate the game's continued growth. The possibility of a Nintendo Switch 2 release was also discussed (see separate article). While the datamined lists offer intriguing speculation, both producers advise caution, emphasizing the fluid nature of game development and the need to prioritize actual game development over elaborate pranks.
