Big news! Valve has launched a major update to the Source SDK, unlocking the full Team Fortress 2 client and server game code.
According to Valve, this update enables players to craft entirely new games using the source code. Unlike Steam Workshop or local mods, it allows modders to modify, expand, or even overhaul Team Fortress 2 in virtually any way they envision.
Creations made with this code cannot be sold and must be shared for free on a non-commercial basis. However, modders can publish their work on the Steam Store, where it will appear as new games in the Steam game list.
“Players have poured a lot into their TF2 inventories, and Steam Workshop contributors have built much of that content,” Valve stated in a blog post. “Most items in the game today come from the dedicated efforts of the TF2 community.
“To honor that, we ask TF2 modders to respect this connection and avoid creating mods aimed at profiting from Workshop contributors’ work. We hope many mods will continue to let players access their TF2 inventories when it fits the mod’s design.”
Valve also revealed a “major update” to its multiplayer Source engine titles, introducing 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction improvements, and numerous other enhancements for TF2, DoD:S, HL2:DM, CS:S, and HLDM:S.
Last December, after a seven-year journey, the Team Fortress 2 comic released its seventh and final chapter. These comics have been a treasure trove for fans, revealing new details about beloved characters and stories, while showcasing Valve’s enduring commitment to one of its classic franchises.
