The much-anticipated release of Civilization 7 has arrived, though it's met with a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam. Despite this, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, remains optimistic, expressing confidence that the game's dedicated fanbase will grow to appreciate its innovations over time.
Currently, Civilization 7 is accessible to those who opted for advanced access, a group typically comprising the game's most ardent fans. These players have been vocal on Steam, critiquing aspects such as the user interface, a perceived lack of map variety, and the absence of expected features at launch.
In response, Firaxis has committed to enhancing the game based on this feedback. Planned updates include improvements to the UI, the introduction of team-based multiplayer modes for cooperative play, and an increase in map diversity, among other enhancements.
### Best Civ 7 LeadersIn an interview with IGN ahead of the release of third quarter financial results, Zelnick acknowledged the mixed reception, citing Eurogamer's 2/5 review as an example of critical feedback. Nevertheless, he remains encouraged by the game's performance, pointing out that Civilization 7 boasts a Metacritic score of 81 and over 20 reviews scoring above 90.
"We think that as people play the game longer, the sentiment improves because with every launch of a new Civ, the team pushes the envelope a little bit and our legacy Civ audience is a little bit nervous about what they initially see and then they realize, wow, this is actually really incredible, and they dive in," Zelnick explained. He admitted that there are areas for improvement, particularly with the UI, but stressed that the team is actively working on these issues.
Zelnick's confidence in the game's eventual reception likely stems from the significant changes introduced in Civilization 7. A notable new feature is the game's structure through three distinct Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each Age culminates in an Age Transition, a unique mechanic where players select a new civilization to represent their empire, choose which Legacies to carry forward, and witness the evolution of the game world. This system, unprecedented in the series, is a bold move that Zelnick believes will win over fans as they experience its depth and potential.
However, in the immediate future, Firaxis faces the challenge of improving sentiment, especially on Steam. A game's user review rating on Steam is pivotal to its visibility and success on the platform. It not only reflects the community's opinion but also directly impacts how the game is displayed to potential buyers. Firaxis's commitment to addressing the current issues is crucial for turning around the early mixed reviews into a more favorable reception.
