The BAFTA Games Awards concluded last night, spotlighting standout titles like Balatro and Vampire Survivors among the top winners. However, the absence of platform-specific categories raises questions about visibility, especially for mobile games.
While the BAFTA Games Awards may not match the reach of Geoff Keighley's Game Awards, they arguably surpass them in prestige, if not in spectacle. Despite the lack of mobile-specific categories at the BAFTA Games Awards 2024, two significant mobile titles made waves. Balatro, a roguelike deckbuilder from Localthunk, clinched the Debut Game award, sparking industry-wide interest and a search for the next big indie hit. Meanwhile, Vampire Survivors, which previously won Best Game in 2023, was honored with the Best Evolving Game award, impressively outperforming competitors like Diablo IV and Final Fantasy XIV Online.
The Absence of Mobile Categories
The BAFTA Games Awards have taken a unique approach by eliminating platform-specific accolades since 2019. This decision has sparked debate, especially given the success of mobile and multiplatform titles like Vampire Survivors and Genshin Impact. Luke Hebblethwaite, a member of the BAFTA games team, once shared with me that the organization believes games should be judged on equal footing, regardless of platform.
The widespread reach of mobile platforms undoubtedly played a role in the success and recognition of games like Balatro and Vampire Survivors. This aspect offers some solace to mobile gamers and developers, serving as a form of acknowledgment despite the lack of dedicated categories.
These are just my thoughts, of course. For more insights on mobile gaming and beyond, feel free to listen to the latest episode of the Pocket Gamer Podcast, where Will and I dive into these topics and more.
