Rocksteady Faces Further Layoffs Following Suicide Squad's Underwhelming Performance
Rocksteady Studios, renowned for the acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, has announced another round of layoffs, following the disappointing performance of their latest title, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The game's mixed reception and divisive post-launch content contributed to the studio's financial struggles. This latest job reduction follows an earlier wave of cuts in September, impacting the QA team.
The underperformance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a costly venture for both Rocksteady and its parent company, WB Games, was publicly acknowledged by Warner Bros. in February. This financial setback led to the initial September layoffs, halving the QA department's workforce from 33 to 15 employees.
According to recent reports from Eurogamer, the studio experienced further staff reductions at the end of 2024, affecting additional QA personnel, programmers, and artists. Several anonymous employees confirmed their termination, highlighting the ongoing impact of the game's commercial failure. Warner Bros. has yet to officially comment on these latest layoffs, mirroring their silence surrounding the September cuts.
Ripple Effect Across WB Games
The negative impact of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League's performance extends beyond Rocksteady. WB Games Montreal, the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins and Gotham Knights, also experienced layoffs in December, primarily affecting quality assurance staff who supported Rocksteady's post-launch DLC development.
The final DLC, released December 10th, introduced Deathstroke as a playable character. While Rocksteady plans one final update for Suicide Squad this month, the studio's future direction remains unclear. The game's underperformance casts a shadow on Rocksteady's otherwise impressive track record of successful DC-themed games, underscoring the significant consequences of the live-service title's failure.
