Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida recently shared fascinating insights into his early career, including his experience with the legendary Nintendo PlayStation prototype. In an interview with MinnMax, Yoshida recounted his journey at Sony, beginning in February 1993, when he joined Ken Kutaragi's team during the original PlayStation's development. While that PlayStation went on to become a global phenomenon, Yoshida and his colleagues also had the unique opportunity to explore the Nintendo PlayStation.
This game, he described, resembled a contemporary space shooter, possibly akin to Sega CD's Silpheed, utilizing CD-based asset streaming. While Yoshida couldn't recall the developer's identity or the game's origin (US or Japan), he expressed optimism about its potential survival: "I wouldn't be surprised," he stated. "You know, it was like a CD, so… yeah."
The Nintendo PlayStation remains a highly sought-after artifact, a testament to a potential partnership that never materialized. Its unreleased status and the allure of a lost piece of gaming history have made it a prized possession among collectors and auction enthusiasts.
The possibility of this Sony-developed space shooter resurfacing is intriguing. Considering Nintendo's own release of Star Fox 2 years after its cancellation, the prospect of this lost title seeing the light of day isn't entirely improbable.
