Take-Two Interactive Aims for Continuous Innovation in Game Development
Why GTA's Publisher Can't Rely on Legacy IPs Indefinitely

Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, shared his strategic perspective on managing the company's intellectual properties during its Q2 2025 earnings call.
Addressing a question about consumer reception to new projects, Zelnick recognized that Take-Two is best known for its established franchises like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption. However, he also expressed a forward-looking vision. Zelnick believes the long-term value of these legacy IPs—for both the company and players—is unlikely to remain as dominant as it has been over the past two decades.

As transcribed by PCGamer, Zelnick discussed the potential for future GTA and RDR sequels: "We know a sequel is a lower-risk venture than launching new intellectual property. However, everything experiences decay. While our franchise sequels often outperform their predecessors—a point of pride in an industry where that's not the norm—the reality is that entropy affects everything. It's a fundamental law of physics, human life, and all existence."
He further cautioned that without pursuing new ideas and IP, the company risks stagnation. "Ultimately, even hit titles fade. If we aren't innovating and creating new intellectual property, simply resting on our laurels would be an understatement. We'd be 'burning the furniture to heat the house,' and that never ends well," Zelnick explained.
Latest on Borderlands 4 and GTA 6 Release Timing

Regarding the release schedule for established franchises, Zelnick told Variety that major titles will be strategically spaced out. "It's safe to say we wouldn't, and no one should, unnecessarily cluster major releases," he stated. Although Take-Two has yet to announce a precise Fall 2025 date for GTA 6, Zelnick confirmed its launch window will not overlap with that of Borderlands 4, which is slated for release between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.
