Stray Kite Studios Announces Wartorn
The newly revealed game blends real-time strategy and roguelite elements within destructible environments, featuring difficult moral decisions and a distinctive painterly art style. Wartorn is scheduled for early access release on Steam and Epic Games Store in spring 2025.
This marks the studio's first original title since its 2018 founding. The Dallas-based team of approximately 30 industry veterans includes developers from acclaimed franchises like BioShock, Borderlands, and Age of Empires. Their previous work includes Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure and numerous Fortnite Creative maps.
A Strategic Roguelite with Emotional Depth
Wartorn follows two elven sisters navigating a fractured fantasy world during their perilous journey home. The gameplay combines tactical combat with narrative choices that significantly impact the experience. Story director Leah Hoyer describes it as "a fantasy world falling apart around you."
Dynamic Gameplay Systems
The game introduces physics-based environmental destruction that ensures unique battle scenarios. An innovative elemental magic system allows players to combine forces (fire, water, lightning) with environmental interactions - electrifying water puddles or igniting tar-covered enemies, for example.
"Every decision matters," explains creative director Paul Hellquist. Players will face genuine dilemmas like rationing limited supplies or choosing between survivors. These choices feed into Wartorn's roguelite structure, where partial progression carries between attempts.
Accessible Tactical Combat
The strategic gameplay features an innovative slow-motion command system during intense battles, allowing precise tactical decisions without pausing the action. This maintains accessibility while preserving the thrill of real-time combat.
Wartorn's painterly aesthetic enhances its dramatic storytelling, with visuals that transition between strategic overview and intimate character moments. The early access version will launch on PC platforms in spring 2025.
