Spike Chunsoft CEO Yasuhiro Iizuka has outlined a strategy to stay dedicated to their fanbase while carefully expanding into the Western market with new genres. Here's a deeper look into Iizuka’s vision for the future.
Spike Chunsoft's Cautious Expansion into the Western Market
Spike Chunsoft, renowned for their niche narrative games like Danganronpa and the Zero Escape series, is setting its sights on broadening its horizons. In a recent interview with AUTOMATON at BitSummit Drift, CEO Yasuhiro Iizuka highlighted the studio's intent to explore beyond their traditional adventure game focus.
"We believe our strength lies in handling content related to Japan’s niche subcultures and anime," Iizuka explained. "While adventure games have been our mainstay, we're eager to incorporate other genres into our repertoire."
Iizuka's approach to expanding in the West is measured and thoughtful. "We have no intention of drastically widening the range of our content," he stated. He believes that venturing into genres like FPS or fighting games, or attempting to publish Western titles for Western audiences, would place them outside their area of expertise.
Despite their focus on "anime-style" narrative games, Spike Chunsoft's portfolio is diverse. They have ventured into sports with titles like Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, fighting games with Jump Force, and wrestling with Fire Pro Wrestling. Additionally, they have successfully published popular Western titles in Japan, including Disco Elysium: The Final Cut, Cyberpunk 2077 for PS4, and the Witcher series.
At the heart of Iizuka's strategy is a commitment to fan satisfaction. "We want to keep cherishing our fans," he emphasized. "Our goal is to become a publisher that fans not only visit once but return to time and again."
While promising to deliver the games and products their loyal fanbase loves, Iizuka also teased the inclusion of unexpected elements. "We'll be sneaking in some surprises here and there to catch people off guard," he hinted, leaving fans eager to see what's in store.
