After Inc.: A $2 Gamble in a Free-to-Play World
Ndemic Creations' bold pricing strategy for its latest release, After Inc., has raised eyebrows. The sequel to the wildly popular Plague Inc., priced at just $2, is a risky move in a mobile gaming market dominated by free-to-play models. Developer James Vaughn himself admitted to reservations in a recent Game File interview.
Released on November 28th, 2024, After Inc. presents a brighter outlook than its predecessors. Set in a post-apocalyptic UK, players rebuild human civilization after the Necroa Virus pandemic. Despite the game's positive premise, Vaughn's apprehension stems from the overwhelming presence of free-to-play games with in-app purchases. However, the success of Plague Inc. and Rebel Inc. provided the confidence to launch After Inc. as a premium title. Vaughn stated, "The only reason we can even consider releasing a premium game is because we have our existing juggernauts...which will help players find our games - and also show that there is still an appetite for intelligent, sophisticated strategy games on mobile."
Ndemic Creations assures players of a complete experience without additional costs. The App Store listing explicitly states the absence of consumable microtransactions, and expansion packs are described as "buy once, play forever."
Early success suggests the gamble might pay off. After Inc. currently ranks among the top paid games on the App Store and boasts a high rating on Google Play. A Steam Early Access release, titled After Inc. Revival, is planned for 2025, expanding the game's reach to PC gamers.
What Awaits in After Inc.?
After Inc. blends 4X grand strategy and simulation. Players establish and manage settlements across the UK, utilizing salvaged resources from ruins to build farms, lumberyards, and other essential structures. Maintaining citizen happiness and well-being is key. Five unique leaders (ten in the Steam version) offer diverse strategic options.
The challenge? Zombies. Players must contend with the undead threat while expanding their settlements. Vaughn's confident closing remark? "Nothing that can’t be solved with some nails stuck in a cricket bat!"
