In Japan, the sudden surge in renting PS5 consoles can be attributed to a combination of factors, including price increases, the popularity of a major game release, and a strategic new service introduced by GEO Corporation.
In February, GEO Corporation, a chain with around 1,000 stores that specializes in renting and selling movies, music, and games, launched a PS5 rental service. With rental prices starting at an affordable 980 yen (approximately $7) for a week and 1,780 yen (approximately $12.50) for two weeks, the service has seen immense success, with rental rates between 80% to 100% at the 400 participating stores.
The idea to rent out PS5 consoles emerged in the summer of 2024, as GEO faced declining DVD and CD rentals due to the rise of streaming services. At the same time, rumors of an impending PS5 price hike in Japan, driven by weak exchange rates, began circulating. On September 2, 2024, Sony confirmed these rumors by increasing the price of the PS5 Digital Edition from 59,980 yen (approximately $427) to 72,980 yen (approximately $520), and the disc drive version from 66,980 yen (approximately $477) to 79,980 yen (approximately $569). This price increase was met with significant dissatisfaction among Japanese consumers, many of whom expressed their frustration on Sony's official X announcement, noting that nearly 80,000 yen was too steep for a four-year-old console.
GEO's manager in charge of rental products, Yusuke Sakai, explained that the company leveraged its existing rental systems and expertise in repairing and resetting second-hand consoles to offer PS5 rentals at lower prices than competitors. Before GEO's service, other Japanese companies charged between 4,500 to 8,900 yen per month for PS5 rentals. GEO's lower prices likely made it more accessible for curious gamers to try out the console for a short period.
The timing of GEO's PS5 rental service launch on February 28 was strategic, aligning with the release of "Monster Hunter Wilds" by Capcom. The Monster Hunter series enjoys strong popularity in Japan, but "Monster Hunter Wilds" was only available on platforms that posed challenges for many players. The Xbox's limited popularity in Japan and the high PC specifications required for the game made the PS5 a more viable option, despite its high cost. Sakai noted that the company prioritized setting up the service in time for the game's launch, recognizing its potential impact.
GEO's rental service reflects the company's long-standing philosophy of making expensive products more accessible through rentals. This approach echoes their past success in offering affordable movie rentals in the 1980s, when purchasing a single movie videotape or laserdisc was prohibitively expensive. Today, with a PS5 costing nearly 80,000 yen, renting becomes a more attractive option for many, including parents and students.
However, the cost-effectiveness of renting a PS5 may be less straightforward when considering additional expenses, such as renting or buying games and the necessity of a PSN subscription for online play. Additionally, GEO's rental plans are limited to one or two weeks, with a daily fee of 500 yen for extended rentals.
