Marvel Rivals' Popularity Shadowed by Bot Concerns
Despite topping Steam and Twitch charts, Marvel Rivals, NetEase Games' new hero shooter, faces growing player suspicion regarding the prevalence of bots in its matches. The game, lauded for its style and iconic Marvel characters like Spider-Man and Wolverine, boasts a large player base. However, weeks after launch, a significant portion of the community is expressing concern about encountering AI opponents in standard Quickplay matches, not just in the designated practice modes.
Reddit users have voiced frustration, stating that battling bots in Quickplay diminishes the experience and that AI should be confined to dedicated AI modes. The suspicion stems from observations of unusual in-game behavior, suspiciously similar player names (often single words in all caps or partial names), and consistently "restricted" enemy profiles. The prevailing theory suggests that the game strategically places players against bots after a series of losses, potentially to mitigate frustration and maintain quick queue times.
NetEase has yet to publicly address these concerns, leaving players to speculate and share their experiences online. The lack of transparency fuels the debate, with players proposing solutions ranging from a toggle to disable bot matches to complete removal of the feature. Some players, however, view bot matches as opportunities to practice specific hero achievements.
One Reddit user, ciaranxy, initiated a community discussion, highlighting the lack of player choice regarding bot encounters in Quickplay. The author confirms encountering a suspicious match exhibiting many of the reported red flags, including stiff player movement and numerous "restricted" profiles. NetEase has been contacted for comment.
Despite this controversy, NetEase's plans for Marvel Rivals in 2025 remain ambitious, including the introduction of the Fantastic Four and a new hero every half-season. A new Peter Parker skin is also expected later this month. While the bot issue remains unresolved, players continue to explore strategies, including using the Invisible Woman to counter bot behavior.
