George R. R. Martin, the mastermind behind the epic fantasy world of Game of Thrones, has recently hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie during IGN Fan Fest 2025. As the co-creator of the rich world and history of FromSoftware's blockbuster game Elden Ring, Martin's involvement has been pivotal, with both FromSoftware and publisher Bandai Namco highlighting his contributions in their promotional efforts. The game itself credits both Martin and FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki for crafting the expansive universe that players explore.
When asked about his potential involvement in a sequel to Elden Ring, Martin cleverly sidestepped the topic but tantalizingly mentioned ongoing discussions about turning Elden Ring into a movie. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring," he teased. This isn't the first time Martin has hinted at such a project, and FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to the idea, emphasizing the need for a "very strong partner" to bring the vision to life in a different medium.
However, Martin acknowledges a significant hurdle to his deep involvement in any Elden Ring movie project: his ongoing work on the long-awaited sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter. He admitted to IGN that being "a few years behind" with his latest book limits the extent of his other commitments. Martin's dedication to his novels remains a priority, even as he humorously acknowledges the grim predictions about his ability to finish The Winds of Winter. "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late... But that's still a priority," he noted, reflecting on the pressure and expectations surrounding his work.
Martin's contributions to Elden Ring extend beyond mere involvement; he delved deep into the game's worldbuilding. He explained to IGN how FromSoftware sought his expertise to flesh out the backstory and history that led to the game's present-day setting. "They wanted the world... So where did that world come from?" Martin shared, detailing his process of crafting the lore, magic, and runes that underpin Elden Ring's universe. He also mentioned that the collaborative process with FromSoftware was both engaging and fruitful, with the team regularly updating him on their progress.
When questioned about whether all his written material was used in the game, Martin highlighted the nature of expansive worldbuilding. "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen," he said, drawing parallels with other epic fantasies like Tolkien's works, where vast histories and backstories enrich the narrative beyond what is directly presented to the audience.
