Dondoko Island: A Minigame of Epic Proportions

Reusing Assets: A Creative Approach to Expansion

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s Dondoko Island Furniture Came From Reused Game AssetsIn a July 30th interview with Automaton, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s lead designer, Michiko Hatoyama, shed light on the unexpected growth of Dondoko Island. Initially conceived as a smaller feature, the minigame blossomed during development. Hatoyama noted, "Dondoko Island started small, but it expanded surprisingly quickly." This expansion was fueled by a significant increase in the number of available furniture crafting recipes.

RGG Studio's innovative approach involved repurposing and adapting existing assets. Hatoyama explained that individual furniture pieces were created "in minutes," a stark contrast to the days or even months typically required for new asset creation. The extensive asset library from the Yakuza series proved invaluable, allowing for rapid development and integration of a vast furniture catalog within Dondoko Island.

The vast island and numerous crafting options offer players unparalleled freedom to transform the humble garbage dump into a luxurious island paradise.

Released on January 25, 2024, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth garnered significant praise. As the ninth mainline entry in the Yakuza series (excluding spin-offs), the game benefits from a wealth of reusable assets. Dondoko Island, despite its minigame status, boasts impressive scale, offering players countless hours of island-building fun thanks to RGG Studio’s efficient asset management.
