Corinne Busche, the director behind Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is reportedly set to depart from EA-owned BioWare in the coming weeks. Eurogamer confirmed Busche's tenure as game director from February 2022 until the game's launch last October. IGN has reached out to EA for further comments on this development.
Since its release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard has faced scrutiny regarding its success. Despite this, Eurogamer notes that Busche's departure is not linked to any broader changes within the studio. Busche, who joined BioWare in 2019 following her work at Maxis on The Sims projects, played a pivotal role in steering Dragon Age: The Veilguard to completion during its final development years. This effort was part of a near decade-long journey that saw the game evolve from a multiplayer concept to a full-fledged single-player RPG, as detailed in IGN’s article, ‘How BioWare Finally Got Dragon Age to the Finish Line After a Tumultuous Decade.’
Eurogamer also reports that Busche's exit is unrelated to the commercial performance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. EA has not yet disclosed whether the game's sales and revenue met or exceeded expectations, with the company set to announce its Q3 2025 financial results on February 4.
In a shift of focus, BioWare has confirmed that it will not be developing any DLC for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Instead, the studio is now concentrating on Mass Effect 5, which has been teased but not fully revealed to the public.
The studio faced significant changes in August 2023, when it laid off around 50 employees, including veteran narrative designer Mary Kirby. These layoffs were part of a broader internal restructuring at EA, which saw the company split into sports and non-sports divisions. Amidst these changes, rumors circulated about BioWare's potential acquisition, and Star Wars: The Old Republic was transitioned to a third-party developer to allow BioWare to focus on its flagship franchises, Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
The journey of Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been tumultuous, with the initial reveal in 2024 receiving negative feedback. The studio quickly responded with an early gameplay tease to address fan concerns. The game's name change from Dreadwolf to The Veilguard also stirred mixed reactions, though subsequent impressions were generally positive.
As BioWare navigates these changes, Dragon Age fans are left pondering the future of the series, wondering if there will be another sequel following The Veilguard.
