On Wednesday morning, Apple unveiled the iPhone 16e, marking it as the most affordable model in their current lineup. This new addition effectively replaces the 2022 iPhone SE, shifting away from the substantial price reductions associated with the older SE series. The iPhone 16e is priced at $599, significantly closing the gap with the $799 iPhone 16 released last fall. Pre-orders for the iPhone 16e start on Friday, February 21, with the official release date set for the following week on Friday, February 28.
The iPhone 16e introduces Apple's new C1 cellular modem, the company's first in-house modem solution. Apple's track record with proprietary chips, such as the M1 series in computers and the A-series in mobile devices, has been impressive. However, the modem is a crucial yet often overlooked component. Should the C1 modem fall short, it could lead to connectivity issues. Apple's past experience with the "Antennagate" scandal, where the iPhone 4 faced signal strength challenges due to antenna design, underscores the importance of ensuring robust connectivity for the iPhone 16e.

From the front, the iPhone 16e closely resembles the iPhone 14, featuring a 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2532x1170 and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits. While not as sharp or bright as the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16e does include the Action button and a USB-C port, though it lacks the Camera Control feature.
The rear design of the iPhone 16e sets it apart with a single 48MP camera, similar to the iPhone SE. This camera shares many traits with the main camera of the iPhone 16, but lacks some advanced features like sensor-shift stabilization, the latest Photographic styles, and adjustable focus in portrait mode. The front-facing camera, however, remains identical, providing Face ID functionality.
The iPhone 16e is encased in aluminum with a glass back and Apple's Ceramic Shield on the front. While Apple touts the Ceramic Shield as "tougher than any smartphone glass," it's worth noting that a newer version of Ceramic Shield, claimed to be "two times tougher," is available on other models. This raises questions about the durability of the iPhone 16e's display, especially considering the wear and tear observed on the iPhone 16 during reviews.
Internally, the iPhone 16e features an "A18" chip, similar to the iPhone 16, but with a reduced 4-core GPU compared to the iPhone 16's 5-core GPU. This reflects Apple's strategy of product differentiation. Despite this, the iPhone 16e retains the Neural Engine, enabling access to Apple Intelligence features.
While the iPhone 16e is priced at $599, making it Apple's most budget-friendly option, it does not offer the same level of discount as the 2022 iPhone SE, which launched at $429. Although the design of the iPhone 16e is more modern than the iPhone SE, it faces stiff competition from Android alternatives around the $600 mark, such as the OnePlus 13R, which might challenge Apple's ability to attract non-Apple ecosystem users.
