Mountaintop Studios, the developers behind the newly released FPS title Spectre Divide, have announced significant price reductions for in-game skins and bundles following immediate player backlash. The price adjustments, implemented mere hours after launch, address widespread criticism concerning the initial cost of cosmetic items.
Price Cuts and Refunds
Game director Lee Horn revealed a price decrease of 17-25% across weapons and outfits. The studio's statement acknowledged player feedback, emphasizing their commitment to addressing concerns: "We've heard your feedback and we're making changes. Weapons & Outfits will be permanently decreasing in price by 17-25%. Players who purchased store items before the change will get a 30% SP [in-game currency] refund." Refunds are rounded up to the nearest 100 SP.
Importantly, the price adjustments exclude Starter packs, Sponsorships, and Endorsement upgrades. Mountaintop Studios clarified that these items will remain at their original price points, with additional SP credited to accounts of players who purchased them alongside Founder's or Supporter packs.
Mixed Reactions and Future Outlook
Despite the price reduction, player response remains divided, mirroring the game's currently mixed Steam reviews (49% negative at the time of writing). While some players appreciate the developer's responsiveness, others express concerns about the timing of the price change and suggest further improvements, such as the ability to purchase individual items from bundles. Skepticism remains, with some fearing the game's long-term viability given the initial negative reception and the increasing competition within the free-to-play market. The situation highlights the crucial role of community feedback and the potential impact of pricing strategies on the success of free-to-play games.
