Will Wright, creator of The Sims, recently unveiled more details about his new AI-powered life simulation game, Proxi, during a Twitch livestream with BreakthroughT1D. This innovative game, first announced in 2018, is finally moving toward release after a period of relative silence, broken only by a teaser trailer last month.
Proxi: A Personalized AI Life Sim
The livestream, part of BreakthroughT1D's Dev Diaries series, focused on Wright's vision for Proxi. BreakthroughT1D, a leading organization dedicated to Type 1 diabetes research, utilizes its Twitch channel to collaborate with the gaming community for fundraising and awareness.
Wright explained that Proxi is an "AI life sim built from your memories." Players input personal memories in paragraph form, which the game then transforms into animated scenes. These scenes are customizable using in-game assets to accurately reflect the memory. Each added memory ("mem") trains the game's AI and populates the player's "mind world," a 3D hexagonal environment.
This mind world expands as more mems are added, becoming populated with Proxies—representations of friends and family. Memories are arranged on a timeline and linked to Proxies to showcase who was involved. Remarkably, these Proxies can even be exported to other game worlds like Minecraft and Roblox!
The core goal of Proxi is to create "magical connections with memories, bringing them to life." Wright emphasized the game's intensely personal nature: "I found myself getting continuously closer and closer to the player. Kind of a saying I've lived by, which is that no game designer has ever gone wrong by overestimating the narcissism of their players." He jokingly added, "It goes to figure that the more I can make a game about you, the more you'll like it."
Proxi is now featured on Gallium Studio's website, with platform announcements forthcoming.
