Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return
Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest, initially slated to conclude on January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will shift to an open queue format. This positive reception fuels speculation about a permanent 6v6 addition to the game.
The 6v6 mode's initial appearance in the Overwatch Classic event last November showcased its popularity. A subsequent playtest, running from December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its appeal. However, unlike the Classic event, this iteration omitted certain legacy hero abilities.
The ongoing extension, announced via Keller's Twitter, allows players extended access to 12-player matches. While the precise end date remains unannounced, the mode's eventual transition to the Arcade section is imminent. The mid-season shift will involve changing from role queue to open queue, requiring each team to field 1-3 heroes per class.
The Argument for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The enduring success of 6v6 shouldn't be surprising; it's been a consistently requested feature since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch. The shift to 5v5 gameplay, a major departure from the original, significantly altered the game's dynamics, impacting player experiences differently.
However, the extended playtest reignites hope for 6v6's permanent inclusion, potentially even within Overwatch 2's competitive playlist. This possibility gains traction as the playtesting phase draws to a close.
