Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 were buzzing about the mention of variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which mysteriously vanished shortly after. Nintendo has now stepped up to clarify the situation surrounding VRR on the Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement provided to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was incorrect. They stated, "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error." When pressed about potential VRR support for docked mode in future firmware updates, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."
This means that while the Nintendo Switch 2 does offer VRR as an option when used in handheld mode, those who play on their TVs won't have access to this feature at launch. This clarification follows a period of confusion, as the initial mention of VRR was spotted and then quickly removed. The gradual disappearance of these mentions from various sites was documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.
Although this news might disappoint those hoping for VRR support in the Switch 2's TV mode right out of the gate, it's not necessarily the end of the road. After all, Sony rolled out VRR support to PS5 consoles via a post-launch update, suggesting that Nintendo could follow suit with a similar update for the Switch 2.
In other Nintendo Switch 2 news, the company recently announced a lineup of games set to receive free performance upgrades on the Switch 2, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has assured fans that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
