Xbox Revives Friend Requests After a Decade-Long Absence
Responding to years of player requests, Xbox has reinstated the friend request system, marking a significant shift from the "follow" system implemented a decade ago. This welcome change allows for more controlled and intentional social interactions on the platform.
A Two-Way Street: More Control, More Flexibility
Xbox Senior Product Manager, Klarke Clayton, celebrated the return, stating, "We’re thrilled to announce the return of friend requests. Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility." The familiar friend request functionality will be accessible via the People tab on Xbox consoles.
The previous "follow" system, while promoting openness, lacked the direct connection and control offered by friend requests. The line between friends and followers often blurred, leaving many users overwhelmed with unwanted connections.
The "follow" feature will remain, enabling users to track content creators and communities without requiring mutual approval. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system, maintaining existing connections.
Privacy and Customization at the Forefront
Microsoft emphasizes user privacy. New privacy and notification settings will accompany the friend request system's return, allowing users to control who can send requests, who can follow them, and which notifications they receive. These settings will be easily accessible within the Xbox settings menu.
Positive Reception and Anticipation
The announcement has been met with overwhelmingly positive feedback on social media, with users expressing excitement and relief. Many highlighted the frustrations of the previous system, which often resulted in an influx of unwanted followers.
While some users humorously admitted they hadn't even realized the feature was missing, the return caters to social players seeking more meaningful online connections. However, the option to play solo remains, highlighting that individual achievement remains a core part of the gaming experience.
Although a precise release date for the full rollout isn't yet available, Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC can currently test the feature. A full release is expected later this year. Join the Xbox Insiders program to experience the revamped friend system early!
