Sony addressed the near day-long PlayStation Network (PSN) outage this past weekend, attributing it to an unspecified "operational issue" in a social media statement. The company offered no further explanation regarding the root cause or preventative measures.
To compensate PlayStation Plus subscribers, Sony will automatically add five extra days to their existing subscriptions.
The outage significantly impacted gameplay, with over one-third of players unable to log in and widespread reports of server crashes.
Sony's requirement of a PSN account, even for single-player PC games, has drawn criticism, and this outage underscores those concerns.
This isn't the first major PSN disruption. A massive data breach in April 2011 resulted in over 20 days of connectivity problems. While less severe, the recent outage has left PS5 users dissatisfied with Sony's limited communication.
