Nintendo rolls out a critical Switch firmware update ahead of its successor's launch.
The newly released Version 20.0.0 introduces several enhancements for the aging console, preparing it for seamless integration with the upcoming Switch 2 launching this June, as detailed in Nintendo's official patch notes.
The standout feature is the new system transfer tool accessible via System Settings, enabling local data migration between your current Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 console.
For users upgrading hardware separately, Nintendo now offers cloud-based transfer - letting you upload system data to secure servers for later retrieval on your Switch 2.
Important note: Transferring triggers automatic factory reset. Nintendo advises completing local transfers only after obtaining Switch 2 unless absolutely necessary.
The update sparks debate among fans - sellers appreciate the cloud transfer option eliminating console overlap needs, while others voice concerns about mandatory resets and cloud data security.
Version 20.0.0 also refreshes select user icons, including Donkey Kong's redesign mirroring his appearance in upcoming Switch 2 exclusives like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World.
