Development Followed X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge
Edwards shared never-before-seen images and gameplay footage of the cancelled title, originally slated for 2003 and tentatively titled "The Invincible Iron Man," a nod to the character's comic book origins. The project followed the studio's release of X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge. His Twitter (X) post included the game's title card, the Genepool Software logo, gameplay screenshots, and original Xbox footage showcasing the startup screen and a desert-set tutorial segment.
Activision's Decision to Cancel "The Invincible Iron Man"
Despite fan enthusiasm, Activision cancelled "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team unemployed. While Activision offered no public explanation, Edwards suggested several possibilities: delays to the film adaptation, dissatisfaction with the game's progress, or the possibility of another developer taking over the project.
The game's distinct Iron Man design, predating Robert Downey Jr.'s MCU portrayal by almost five years, also drew comment. The suit closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version from the early 2000s. Edwards confirmed he wasn't involved in the design choice. He promised further gameplay footage, but at the time of writing, this remains unreleased.
