Best Elden Ring Starting Classes, Ranked

The two best starting classes in Elden Ring are undoubtedly the Vagabond and the Wretch. However, several other classes also make compelling cases for the top spots. Let's dive into the rankings:

10. Bandit

The Bandit is considered the least favorable starting class. Starting at a mere level 5, it focuses on Dexterity, which can be challenging in the early game. Coupled with subpar equipment, the Bandit struggles to make an impact, making it the least recommended choice.

9. Confessor

The Confessor, centered around Faith, struggles due to the difficulty in building up this stat without specific items. The starting equipment doesn't synergize well with early builds or enhance Faith-based damage, making it a less desirable option.

8. Prisoner

Similar to the Bandit, the Prisoner is a weaker version of other Dexterity and Intelligence builds. Starting off quite vulnerable, players looking for these stats can find better alternatives, rendering the Prisoner less appealing.

7. Warrior

Among Dexterity-focused classes, the Warrior stands out slightly better, starting with dual swords. While it offers the highest base Dexterity, the gear doesn't justify choosing it over other options, though it's still preferable to the previous three classes.

6. Prophet

For those interested in Faith-based classes, the Prophet is the better choice. It comes with decent spells, but its equipment falls short compared to others. If you know where to find good Faith weapons, the Prophet can still be viable.

5. Hero

As we move into the top half of our rankings, the Hero shines with its high Strength and a powerful Battle Axe. Starting at 16 Strength, it's perfect for early-game combat, though its low Dexterity can be a hurdle. There's a better Strength class, but the Hero is still strong.

4. Samurai

The Samurai is the top pick for Dexterity builds. It boasts excellent armor and the Uchigatana, a weapon with great scaling and bleeding capabilities, making it a formidable choice for early gameplay.

3. Astrologer

For those leaning towards mage builds or using Intelligence, the Astrologer is the go-to class. It excels in early-game spellcasting, starting with 16 Intelligence at level 6. The equipment is perfect for mage playstyles, making it ideal for those looking to transition into Intelligence and Strength builds.

2. Wretch

Starting at level one with 10 points in every stat, the Wretch offers flexibility but a challenging start due to its lack of armor. It's perfect for players who want to tailor their build from scratch or plan to respec later, making it a top choice for build versatility.

1. Vagabond

The Vagabond is the best starting class for both new and experienced players. With an excellent stat distribution, a powerful weapon, and versatile armor, it's easy to pivot into any build. The Vagabond's well-rounded nature makes it the safest and most effective choice for starting your journey in Elden Ring.

When in doubt, choosing the Vagabond will set you up for success with a solid class.

Does Your Starting Class Matter in Elden Ring?

In Elden Ring, your starting class has a minimal impact unless you're aiming to min-max your build. Even if you start with a less optimal class like the Bandit, you can eventually tailor your stats to suit your desired build. Min-maxing, even in PvP, offers only a slight advantage, making the choice of starting class more about personal preference than necessity.

What Is the Easiest Class for Beginners?

For complete newcomers to Elden Ring, the Vagabond is the recommended class. Its straightforward melee combat helps new players get accustomed to the game's mechanics, making it an ideal choice for those finding their footing.

Elden Ring is available now on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.
