Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7: A Million Mods and Counting
The release of Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7 has ignited a modding frenzy. Within 24 hours of its September 5th launch, over one million mods were installed, according to Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke. This figure has since exploded, surpassing three million installs according to mod.io founder Scott Reismanis.
Vincke himself highlighted the significant impact of modding on the game, stating, "Modding is pretty big." This surge is fueled by Patch 7's introduction of Larian's own Mod Manager, a user-friendly in-game tool for browsing, installing, and managing community-created content.
Beyond the Mod Manager, Patch 7 delivered substantial updates: new evil endings, improved split-screen, and enhanced modding tools accessible via Steam. These tools, utilizing Larian's Osiris scripting language, enable modders to craft custom stories, scripts, and even perform basic debugging, with direct publishing capabilities.
A significant development, highlighted by PC Gamer, is a community-created "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked" which expands upon Larian's editor, including a level editor and reactivated features. This reflects a community actively pushing the boundaries of the game's modding capabilities, despite Larian's initial cautious approach to providing full development tool access.
Looking ahead, Larian is actively pursuing cross-platform modding, a considerable undertaking given the complexities of ensuring compatibility across PC and consoles. Vincke confirmed that PC support will precede console support, allowing for iterative improvements and addressing potential issues before a wider rollout.
Patch 7 also included numerous enhancements beyond modding: UI refinements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and extensive bug fixes and performance optimizations. With further updates planned, the future of Baldur's Gate 3 modding looks incredibly bright.
