The latest entry in Ubisoft’s iconic stealth-action open-world series, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, has finally arrived. Set in 16th-century Japan, players take on the roles of Naoe and Yasuke, marking the 14th installment in the core series. But where does it stand among its predecessors? With over 30 games in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, we're focusing solely on the mainline entries, excluding mobile, side-scrolling, VR, and spin-offs like Bloodlines or Liberation.
The journey began in 2007 with Desmond Miles entering the Animus to experience the life of his ancestor Altaïr. Now, 18 years later, the series has evolved significantly. To rank these games, I’ve created a personal tier list based on my enjoyment of each title. Here's how I've ranked them:
At the top of my list, in the S-tier, sits Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. For me, this game strikes the perfect balance with its island exploration, ship combat, and vibrant cast, making it the quintessential Assassin’s Creed experience. Joining it in the S-tier is Assassin’s Creed 2, the game that truly propelled the series into the spotlight. In the A-tier, I've placed Valhalla, which might surprise some, but I thoroughly enjoyed its Viking-inspired combat and the addictive Orlog minigame. Alongside it is Unity, whose depiction of French Revolution-era Paris remains breathtaking even a decade later.
Do you disagree with my rankings? Perhaps you find Valhalla too expansive or believe Assassin’s Creed 2 is overrated? Now's your chance to create your own tier list and see how your S, A, B, C, and D tiers compare with the IGN community.
