Firesprite described Project Copper as a "third-person vehicular action combat game based on a classic IP owned by PlayStation," featuring third-person shooter and vehicle combat mechanics with a last-one-standing objective.
The cancellation reportedly stemmed from Sony's February 2024 layoffs, where the game, though in development, lacked greenlighting. This decision aligns with Sony's broader retreat from live-service games following a period of significant investment. The failure of projects like Concord, and the resource-intensive demands of live service exemplified by the halted The Last of Us Online, contributed to this shift. While Helldivers 2 proved a resounding success, Concord's swift demise highlighted the risks involved. Sony also canceled two other unannounced live-service titles in January 2024.
