World of Warcraft's "The War Within" expansion unveils a new login screen! While not yet live in the beta and subject to change, dataminers have revealed a first look. This marks a departure from tradition, as every WoW expansion since launch has featured a distinctive gateway or archway.
For nearly two decades, WoW login screens have been iconic. Now, thanks to game developer Ghost's Twitter reveal, we see a circular design featuring the expansion's logo. This rotating ring, reminiscent of earthen architecture, is a unique departure from previous gate-themed screens. It's not yet clear if this represents an in-game location.
A Look Back at WoW Login Screens:
- Vanilla: The Dark Portal (Azeroth)
- The Burning Crusade: The Dark Portal (Outland)
- Wrath of the Lich King: Gate of Icecrown Citadel
- Cataclysm: Gate of Stormwind
- Mists of Pandaria: Twin Monoliths in the Vale of Eternal Blossoms
- Warlords of Draenor: Dark Portal (Draenor)
- Legion: Burning Legion gate
- Battle for Azeroth: Gate of Lordaeron
- Shadowlands: Gate of Icecrown Citadel
- Dragonflight: Tyrhold arches in Valdrakken
- The War Within: Rotating earthen ring
Player reactions are mixed. Some appreciate the minimalist design and its potential to complement the Worldsoul Saga's overall aesthetic. Others find it less visually striking than previous screens, lamenting the end of the long-standing gateway tradition. The final design might still evolve before the expansion's August 26th release. The resemblance to the Hearthstone main menu is also a point of discussion among fans.
