Mastering Weapon and Armor Upgrades in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide
Progressing through Avowed introduces increasingly challenging enemies. To maintain combat effectiveness, upgrading your gear is crucial. This guide details how to enhance weapons and armor in Avowed.
Upgrade Locations: Workbenches
Weapon and armor upgrades are performed at Workbenches (pictured above). These require specific materials depending on the item type and quality. Many materials are readily available in the game world or craftable. However, advancing a weapon's quality requires progressively rarer Adra types.
Workbenches are situated at Party Camps, established near Adra Waystones. Locate a Waystone, interact with it, and choose the option to set up camp. These camps are marked on your map with a tent icon and offer fast travel capabilities.
Understanding Weapon and Armor Levels
Avowed uses a two-tiered system for gear power: Quality and Upgrade Levels.

Quality: Represented by a numerical value, color rarity (Green, Blue, Purple, Red, Gold), and an adjective. Quality directly correlates to enemy levels in the Living Lands. Lower quality gear is significantly less effective against higher-level foes. Using gear of equal or superior quality ensures optimal combat performance.

Upgrade Levels (+0 to +3): Within each Quality tier, three additional upgrade levels exist. While less impactful than quality increases, these still boost stats. All three levels must be maxed before upgrading to the next Quality.
Which Gear to Upgrade: Prioritize Unique Items
Avowed features standard and Unique weapons and armor. Standard gear is readily found as loot or purchased, while Unique items are named, special pieces often acquired through quests or boss encounters. Some merchants sell select Unique items.
Key Upgrade Strategy: Focus your resources on upgrading Unique weapons and armor. Unique gear can reach Legendary Quality, surpassing the Superb limit of standard items. They also possess superior bonuses and perks. Standard gear serves as temporary replacements and should be sold or salvaged for resources to enhance your Unique equipment.
In short: Upgrade your Unique gear, and use standard gear as a stepping stone.
