Following my exploration of the best Switch party games in 2024, the exceptional release of Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club inspired me to compile a list of the top visual novels and adventure games currently available on the Switch. This encompasses both pure visual novels and adventure games with visual novel elements. The selection spans various regions and release years, offering a diverse range of experiences. The order is not ranked.
Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club ($49.99) + Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection
Nintendo's 2021 remakes of the Famicom Detective Club games were a revelation. Now, in 2024, Emio – The Smiling Man arrives as a stunning new entry, both physically and digitally. This lavish production feels like a genuine sequel, though some might find that a drawback. The ending is shockingly good, fully justifying its M rating. It's a surprising highlight of my 2024 gaming year. Download the demo! If you prefer to play the originals first, the Famicom Detective Club: The Two-Case Collection is readily available. Fans of classic adventure game design will find much to appreciate.
VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action ($14.99)
A repeat appearance on my "best of" lists, VA-11 Hall-A is a personal favorite. Its compelling story, memorable music, striking aesthetic, and exceptional characters make it a standout. The Switch port is excellent, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone, regardless of their preference for point-and-click adventures. Mix drinks and change lives!
The House in Fata Morgana: Dreams of the Revenants Edition ($39.99)
This definitive edition of The House in Fata Morgana is a masterpiece of storytelling, encompassing the original game and much more. A pure visual novel, it shines on the Switch. Prepare for a gothic horror experience that will linger long after the credits roll. The music is also exceptional.
Coffee Talk Episode 1+2 ($12.99 + $14.99)
While sold separately on the eShop and physically (my imports from Japan), a North American bundle exists. Both Coffee Talk games offer a relaxing experience with a captivating story. If you enjoy coffee, engaging characters, pixel art, and great music, this is for you.
Type-Moon's Visual Novels: Tsukihime, Fate/stay night, and Mahoyo (Variable)
This entry includes Tsukihime, Witch on the Holy Night (Mahoyo), and the recently released Fate/stay night Remastered. All are lengthy but rewarding. For a classic visual novel introduction, Fate/stay night is a good starting point, but Tsukihime's remake is highly recommended. Witch on the Holy Night follows these two in terms of quality.
PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo ($19.99)
Square Enix's PARANORMASIGHT surprised me with its exceptional narrative, delivery, and engaging mechanics. It features memorable characters, stunning art, and a compelling mystery. A fantastic horror adventure.
Gnosia ($24.99)
Described as a sci-fi social deduction RPG, it's more of an adventure/visual novel hybrid. Identify the Gnosia, gather information, and vote. A fantastic experience, despite some RNG elements. I enjoyed it so much I purchased physical copies for Switch and PS5, in addition to the Steam version.
Steins;Gate Series (Variable)
Spike Chunsoft's Steins;Gate series, particularly Steins;Gate Elite, is essential for visual novel newcomers, especially anime fans. While I hope for the original version's release, Elite is a strong recommendation. Play the other Steins;Gate games after experiencing Elite.
AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES and nirvanA Initiative (Variable)
A collaboration between Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi and No More Heroes character designer Yusuke Kozaki, these two games are exceptional. While the lack of Zero Escape on Switch is lamented, these are well worth the full price.
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD ($19.99)
An adventure game with multiple endings, oscillating between disturbing horror and heartwarming moments. It follows a young streamer's daily life. Unforgettable.
Ace Attorney Series (Variable)
Capcom has brought the entire Ace Attorney series to Switch. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a great entry point. The entire series is now accessible on one handheld.
Spirit Hunter: Death Mark, NG, and Death Mark II (Variable)
The Spirit Hunter trilogy blends horror, adventure, and visual novel elements with a striking art style. While graphically intense, the stories and localizations are excellent.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim ($59.99)
Not a pure adventure game, but it incorporates real-time strategy battles. A sci-fi masterpiece that deserves a place on this list.
This list is more extensive than a top 10, reflecting my desire to include all the games I highly recommend. I've even included entire series due to their quality. Let me know if you have other suggestions! I'm always searching for more compelling stories in these genres. Thanks for reading!
Note: A separate list of otome games is in progress.
