Warframe's TennoCon 2024 delivered a spectacular showcase, culminating in the announcement of Warframe: 1999, a major update promising a nostalgic and action-packed experience.
The journey begins with a prologue quest, "The Lotus Eaters," launching in August 2024. This quest reunites players with a beloved character and sets the stage for the 1999 storyline, also introducing Sevatgoth Prime and their unique weaponry. Completing "The Lotus Eaters" is a prerequisite for accessing Warframe: 1999, slated for release in Winter 2024.
Warframe: 1999 plunges players into an alternate 1999, where a Y2K virus threatens global devastation. The setting is Höllvania, a vibrant 90s city corrupted by Techrot. Players navigate this retro-futuristic landscape using Atomicyles, futuristic vehicles capable of bullet jumps, drifts, and explosive maneuvers. The player controls the Hex, a team of six unique characters, each equipped with a Protoframe, a Warframe design showcasing the human form.
The Hex team features Arthur (Excalibur), Aoi (Mag), Quincy (CYTE-09 – a new Warframe also coming to the Origin System), and others, voiced by a star-studded cast including Alpha Takahashi, Ben Starr, Melissa Medina, and Amelia Tyler. Players can interact with the characters via instant messaging, adding a unique layer of engagement.
Adding to the 90s theme, players will battle On-lyne, a Technocyte-infected boy band led by Zeke (voiced by Nick Apostolides). Their infectious music, including the hit single "Party of Your Lifetime," will be available on major streaming platforms.
Fashion takes center stage with enhanced customization options. Players can equip two fashion frame loadouts and utilize new Gemini Skins to bring the Protoframes, like Arthur and Aoi, into the Origin System, complete with fully voiced dialogue.
Beyond the core gameplay, Digital Extremes is collaborating with THE LINE to create an anime short based on Warframe: 1999. Furthermore, new Heirloom skins for Ember (available now) and Rhino (early 2025) are also on the horizon.
