Back in February, I sought insights from Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, regarding his confidence in meeting GTA 6's initial fall 2025 release window. His response indicated optimism, stating he felt "really good about it." However, by May, the inevitable happened—GTA 6 was pushed back to May 26, 2026.
So, what transpired during those intervening months? To understand this shift, I revisited Zelnick in a follow-up interview timed alongside Take-Two's recent financial reports. He explained that as GTA 6 neared completion, the necessity for additional polish became increasingly evident.
"As we near the completion of a project aiming for perfection," Zelnick noted, "the demands—or lack thereof—for further refinement become apparent. In this instance, we identified an opportunity with a modest extension of time to ensure Rockstar Games could achieve its creative vision unencumbered. Naturally, I backed this strategy."
The delay of GTA 6 beyond Take-Two's current fiscal year impacts short-term revenue projections, yet Zelnick remains bullish on upcoming releases such as Gearbox's Borderlands 4, Hangar 13's Mafia: The Old Country, and future installments in the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series. He expressed confidence in Take-Two's fiscal outlook for 2026.
"I feel incredibly optimistic about our trajectory heading into Fiscal 26," Zelnick stated. "While delays are always challenging, prioritizing our teams' pursuit of excellence remains paramount."

Returning to the topic of reliability, I posed the same query to Zelnick as in February: how confident is he that Rockstar will meet the May 26, 2026 deadline? This time, his tone conveyed greater assurance:
"Historically, when we establish a specific release date, we've consistently met it. Of course, unforeseen circumstances exist, but setting a definitive timeline gives us confidence in achieving our goals."
This statement subtly suggests confidence in GTA 6's release without outright guaranteeing it. Still, with an official date set, another postponement would indeed be unexpected.
The unveiling of GTA 6 Trailer 2 and accompanying details has fueled extensive speculation about the game's potential. Some GTA enthusiasts speculate Liberty City may feature either at launch or as post-launch content.
