Despite not yet being released, DFC Intelligence projects the Nintendo Switch 2 to dominate next-gen console sales. Their 2024 Video Game Market Report and Forecast, released December 17th, predicts the Switch 2 will sell 15-17 million units in 2025, surpassing all competitors.
Projected Market Leadership
DFC Intelligence forecasts the Switch 2 as the "clear winner," positioning Nintendo as the console market leader. This projection stems from its anticipated 2025 release, giving it a significant head start over competitors Microsoft and Sony, who are expected to launch new consoles by 2028. The report estimates over 80 million Switch 2 units sold by 2028, potentially exceeding Nintendo's manufacturing capacity.
While Sony and Microsoft are reportedly developing handheld consoles, these remain in early stages. DFC Intelligence suggests only one post-Switch 2 console will achieve significant success, potentially a hypothetical "PS6," leveraging PlayStation's established fanbase and strong intellectual properties.
The Switch's enduring popularity is undeniable, having surpassed PlayStation 2 lifetime US sales, reaching second place in all-time US console sales behind only the Nintendo DS, according to Circana (formerly NPD).
Industry Growth and Positive Outlook
DFC Intelligence paints a positive picture for the video game industry, projecting sustained growth through the end of the decade after a recent slump. 2025 is anticipated to be a particularly strong year, fueled by the Switch 2 launch and the release of Grand Theft Auto VI.
The gaming audience is expected to surpass 4 billion players by 2027, driven by the accessibility of portable gaming and the growth of esports and gaming influencers. This expanding market is further boosting hardware sales across PC and consoles.
