SNK and Capcom's classic crossover fighter, SVC Chaos, is back! Announced at EVO 2024 and now available on Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4, this re-release brings the legendary battle between SNK and Capcom characters to modern platforms. Xbox fans, unfortunately, will miss out on this revival.
Modernized SVC Chaos for a New Generation
The updated SVC Chaos features a roster of 36 iconic fighters, including Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury, the Mars People from Metal Slug, Tessa from Red Earth, and Capcom stalwarts Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter. This dream match-up is enhanced with modern features:
- Rollback Netcode: Ensuring smooth online play for competitive matches.
- Tournament Modes: Supporting single elimination, double elimination, and round-robin formats.
- Hitbox Viewer: Provides a detailed view of character hitboxes.
- Gallery Mode: Showcasing 89 pieces of artwork.
A Legacy Revived
The return of SVC Chaos is a significant event. Originally released in 2003, the game's absence for over two decades reflects SNK's challenges in the early 2000s, including bankruptcy and a difficult transition from arcades to home consoles. Despite this, the game's dedicated fanbase kept the memory alive, fueling the demand for its return. This re-release celebrates that legacy and introduces SVC Chaos to a new audience.
Capcom's Future Crossover Plans
In a recent interview with Dexerto, Street Fighter 6 producer Shuhei Matsumoto discussed Capcom's vision for future crossover fighting games. While the team dreams of creating a new Marvel vs. Capcom or a new Capcom/SNK collaboration, Matsumoto emphasized the considerable time and effort such projects require. The immediate focus, he stated, is to reintroduce classic titles to a new audience on modern platforms.
Matsumoto also highlighted the success of bringing back past Marvel vs. Capcom titles, a result of years of discussions with Marvel and the significant role community-driven tournaments, like EVO, played in reigniting interest. This renewed enthusiasm underscores the potential for future collaborations.
