Marvel's Star Wars comics are entering a new phase. Previously, the publisher focused on the period between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, with titles like Star Wars, Darth Vader, and Doctor Aphra. Now, with those concluded, Marvel is expanding to other eras. Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku covers the final major battle between the Rebellion and the Empire, while Star Wars: Jedi Knights explores the Jedi Order before The Phantom Menace. Most notably, Star Wars: Legacy of Vader delves deeper into Kylo Ren's character.
IGN interviewed writer Charles Soule about Legacy of Vader and its impact on Ben Solo. See the exclusive preview below, then read on.

Kylo Ren's Continued Story
Soule, known for his work on the post-Empire Strikes Back era (including War of the Bounty Hunters and Dark Droids), explains his return to Kylo Ren, a character he previously explored in 2020's The Rise of Kylo Ren. He felt there was much more to tell about Kylo's story, beyond what the films revealed. Setting the comic after Episode VIII allows him to explore a character undergoing significant change in a short time.
Soule also reunited with artist Luke Ross, with whom he collaborated on previous Star Wars projects. He praises Ross's ability to capture Kylo Ren's turmoil and unpredictable rage, alongside colorist Nolan Woodard.
Ben Solo After The Last Jedi
Legacy of Vader is set immediately after The Last Jedi. Ben has failed to turn Rey, battled Luke, nearly killed his mother, and controls the First Order. The series explores his internal conflict as he tries to overcome his past.
Soule highlights Ben's self-deception, his grand pronouncements masking his inner turmoil. While outwardly aiming to destroy his past, he seeks guidance, even from his grandfather, Darth Vader. His visit to Vader's Mustafar fortress underscores this internal conflict.
The First Order's internal politics also play a significant role, featuring characters like General Hux and General Pryde. Kylo Ren's efforts to consolidate power within the First Order form a key part of the narrative.
Legacy of Vader aims to deepen our understanding of Kylo Ren/Ben Solo, adding layers to the Sequel Trilogy villain. While the ending is known, the comic will provide insight into his choices in The Rise of Skywalker. Soule intends the story to be both self-contained and enriching for those familiar with the broader Star Wars canon. He emphasizes the emotional turmoil and action within the narrative.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1 releases February 5, 2025.
