1047 Games, the developers behind the beloved 2019 multiplayer FPS, Splitgate, are back with an exciting sequel. Dive into the details of what's in store with the upcoming Sol Splitgate League.
Splitgate 2 Launches in 2025
Familiar yet Fresh
On July 18, 1047 Games unveiled a cinematic announcement trailer for Splitgate 2, the eagerly awaited sequel to their free-to-play shooter that captured hearts worldwide upon its 2019 debut.Ian Proulx, CEO of 1047 Games, emphasized their vision to "build a game that can last a decade or more." The original game drew inspiration from classic arena shooters, but the team realized that "to make a modern game that lasts, we had to develop the tools for a deep and satisfying gameplay loop."
Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing at 1047 Games, highlighted their new approach to portals, stating, "we rethought our approach to portals, hoping to ensure true Portal Gods could excel, but that no one had to constantly portal to taste victory."
While specific gameplay details remain under wraps, the developers confirmed that Splitgate 2 is being crafted with Unreal Engine 5, will be free-to-play, and introduces a "faction system." Although it retains familiar elements, "Splitgate 2 should look and feel completely fresh from the original."
Splitgate 2 is slated for a 2025 release across PC, PS5|PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.
Often described as "Halo meets Portal," Splitgate is an arena PvP first-person shooter where players can create wormholes to navigate the map swiftly.
The original game surged in popularity after a demo release by founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian, garnering about 600,000 downloads in just a month. Its initial success was so overwhelming that servers had to be taken offline to expand capacity.
After years in early access, Splitgate officially launched on September 15, 2022. The studio announced they would stop updating it to focus on "building the game fans deserve," hinting at "a new game in the Splitgate universe which will present revolutionary, not evolutionary, changes to our game."
New Characters, Maps, Factions
The trailer introduces the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions that "add more depth to the gameplay experience."
According to the game’s Steam page, each faction offers unique playstyles. Joining Aeros lets you "dash around the battlefield." Alternatively, you could "control the chaos as the tactical and time-manipulating Meridian." For a more aggressive approach, "run in guns blazing with Sabrask’s raw power."
Although the specifics of how these factions will influence gameplay are still under wraps, it's confirmed that "Splitgate 2 is not a hero shooter" like Overwatch or Valorant.
Fans eager for gameplay footage will need to wait until Gamescom 2024, happening from August 21 to 25. However, the trailer alone has sparked immense excitement.
While most gameplay details remain undisclosed, the developers assured that the trailer "is an amazing representation of what you'll experience in Splitgate 2." They further teased, "yes, those are real maps. Yes, those are real Splitgate 2 weapons. Yes, that is a trail following you out of a portal. And yes, I’m telling you, in the house of Halo, that dual wielding was always awesome, so we brought it back."
Splitgate 2 Comics
Splitgate 2 will not feature a single-player campaign, but for those interested in the game's lore, a mobile companion app offers comics, character cards, and more. You can also take a quiz to discover which faction best suits your playstyle.
