Nintendo's announcement of ending regular updates for Splatoon 3 has reignited speculation about a potential Splatoon 4. While the game isn't entirely abandoned – holiday events and necessary updates will continue – the shift marks a significant change.
The End of an Era (for Regular Updates)
Nintendo confirmed that regular content updates for Splatoon 3 will cease. However, seasonal events like Splatoween and Frosty Fest will return, along with ongoing monthly challenges and weapon balance patches as needed. The official Twitter (X) announcement stated: "After 2 INK-credible years of Splatoon 3, regular updates will come to a close. Don't worry! Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights will continue with some returning themes! Updates for weapon adjustments will be released as needed. Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will continue for the time being."
This announcement followed the conclusion of the Grand Festival event on September 16th, celebrated with a retrospective video showcasing past Splatfests. The video concluded with a heartfelt "Thanks for holding down the Splatlands with us! It's been a blast!"
Splatoon 4: Whispers of a Sequel
The cessation of major updates has fueled rumors of a Splatoon 4 announcement. Speculation intensified after some players noticed potential easter eggs or hints within the Grand Festival event, suggesting a new city setting for a future installment. While some dismissed these as simply existing Splatoon 3 assets, others believe they point towards a new location for the next game.
Recent reports have hinted at Nintendo initiating development of a new Splatoon title for the Switch. The Grand Festival, serving as the final major Splatfest, further strengthens fan belief in an imminent Splatoon 4 reveal. Past Splatoon Final Fests have influenced subsequent sequels, leading to speculation that Splatoon 3's "Past, Present, or Future" theme might foreshadow the direction of the next game.
While there's no official confirmation, the confluence of events strongly suggests that the wait for Splatoon 4 might be nearing its end. For now, however, fans remain patiently awaiting an official announcement from Nintendo.
