Sony is set to bring a fresh take on the classic military sci-fi novel "Starship Troopers" with a new movie reboot, according to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety. Esteemed director Neill Blomkamp, known for his work on "District 9," "Elysium," and "Chappie," has been tapped to write and direct this new adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel. This project, to be produced under Sony's Columbia Pictures, is distinct from Paul Verhoeven's 1997 cult classic sci-fi satire of the same name, opting instead to delve directly into the source material.
Interestingly, Sony's decision to greenlight Blomkamp's "Starship Troopers" comes on the heels of their announcement of a live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation game "Helldivers," developed by Arrowhead Game Studios. "Helldivers" draws significant inspiration from Verhoeven's take on "Starship Troopers," featuring a narrative where soldiers fight for a satirical fascist regime dubbed "Super Earth," battling alien bugs and other foes while promoting ideals of Liberty and Managed Democracy.
The coexistence of these two projects under Sony's umbrella raises questions about potential competition between the new "Starship Troopers" and "Helldivers" films. However, The Hollywood Reporter clarifies that Blomkamp's vision aims to revisit Heinlein's original work, which contrasts sharply with Verhoeven's satirical approach. Heinlein's novel is often interpreted as promoting the very ideals that Verhoeven's film lampooned.
As of now, neither the new "Starship Troopers" nor the "Helldivers" movie has a confirmed release date, indicating that fans may have to wait a while before seeing these projects come to fruition. Blomkamp's most recent directorial effort was with Sony on the film "Gran Turismo," based on the iconic PlayStation racing simulation series.
