The possibility of a Sleeping Dogs film adaptation has reignited, thanks to Marvel star Simu Liu. According to a report by Newsweek, Liu responded to a fan's call for a movie based on the 2012 game on X/Twitter, stating he is actively working to revive the project. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," Liu announced, sparking hope among fans.
Originally announced in 2017, the film was set to star Donnie Yen, but it vanished from the radar the following year. Just weeks ago, Yen confirmed the project had been canceled. He shared his disappointment, revealing his significant investment in time and money. "I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen explained. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?"
The cancellation seemed to close the door on the action franchise set in Hong Kong, but Liu's recent social media interaction has opened a new window of possibility. Whether Liu will secure the rights or successfully bring the project to fruition remains uncertain.
Sleeping Dogs was initially released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, following the story of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates one of Hong Kong's notorious Triad crime syndicates. The game was well-received, earning an 8/10 from IGN, though no sequels were produced.
