Konami's latest Silent Hill Transmission unveiled Silent Hill f, a chilling new entry in the beloved horror franchise transporting players to 1960s Japan.
First announced in 2022 as a game set in a "beautiful, therefore terrifying" world, Silent Hill f is penned by Ryukishi07, the acclaimed writer behind Higurashi and Umineko. This new reveal offers a deeper look into the game's unsettling atmosphere.
Silent Hill f: Finding Beauty in Terror
Konami showcased a new trailer and detailed the game's core concept: "finding the beauty in terror." Players will face a difficult choice within the game's stunning yet horrifying 1960s Japanese setting. While the nature of this choice remains shrouded in mystery, the story unfolds through the eyes of Shimizu Hinkao, an ordinary teenager whose life is irrevocably altered when her town is enveloped in fog and undergoes a horrific transformation. Hinkao must navigate this unrecognizable world, solving puzzles, battling strange creatures, and ultimately confronting a pivotal decision. The narrative promises a compelling blend of beauty and terror.
This original story offers a perfect entry point for newcomers, while seasoned players can anticipate familiar Easter eggs woven throughout the narrative. The game is set in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka, inspired by the real-world location of Kanayama, Gero, in Gifu Prefecture.
Creature and character designer, kera, shared their creative process, highlighting the challenge of crafting new horrors while remaining true to the Silent Hill legacy: "I love the Silent Hill series... When it came to Silent Hill f, and bringing the setting to Japan, we had to come up with something that felt just a little different…The monster designs were the hardest. I had to consider everything that's come in Silent Hill before, and figure out how to take this game in a different direction, but still be Silent Hill."
Music plays a crucial role, with Akira Yamaoka (a longtime Silent Hill composer) and Kensuke Inage (known for his work on the Dynasty Warriors series) composing for the Fog World and Otherworld, respectively. Inage describes his score as blending "ancient Japanese court music with ambient echoes," aiming to evoke the protagonist's emotional turmoil.
While a release date remains unannounced, Silent Hill f is confirmed for release on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
