Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Fear not, fans of the galaxy far, far away—the director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still very much on board, and we have a reassuring update straight from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, hinting at the project's progress. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
While details about the film remain largely under wraps, we do know that it will take place after the events of *The Rise of Skywalker*. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shed light on its timeline in a February interview with Deadline, stating, "That's also in the future. It's all post-[the first] nine. Shawn's is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-*Rise of Skywalker* era.
Kennedy also confirmed that this eagerly awaited movie will hit theaters after the release of *The Mandalorian and Grogu* in 2026. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Adding to the excitement, reports suggest that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this mysterious project.
Jonathan Tropper's optimistic words are a promising sign that Levy's Star Wars film is gaining momentum, though fans will need to exercise patience as it's not expected to premiere until at least the last quarter of 2026, or perhaps even 2027.
Disney's last Star Wars film release was *Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker* in 2019, which received mixed reviews. Since then, several planned projects, including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from *Game of Thrones* showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, have been canceled. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for late 2026 was removed from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set within his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-*The Rise of Skywalker*. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen its share of changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently stepping down after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nevertheless, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars endeavors, with reports indicating she'll appear in multiple upcoming films.
Beyond these projects, Disney has even more in store for Star Wars fans. Late last year, it was announced that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to write a new trilogy, which, contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of *Andor*, set to premiere on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple premiere episode that promises to be packed with excitement.
